Training for Endurance Races

Follow my journey as I train for three ultra-endurance races in the summer and fall of 2024

Leadville 100 MTB Race

On August 10, 2024, I plan to complete the highest and hardest mountain bike race in North America in Leadville, Colorado.

Riders take on a grueling 105-mile course with about 12,000 feet of elevation gain. The race across the sky starts at an elevation of 10,000 feet, reaching a peak elevation of 12,600 feet above sea level at the summit of Columbine Mine. Top athletes worldwide have come to Leadville for the ultimate test of Grit, Guts, and Determination, on their quest for the coveted silver and gold belt-buckle.

Racing the Planet: Desert Race

Starting September 22, I will travel to the desert in Jordan to complete the 20-Year Race. This staged race is 155 miles, over 6 days, and requires racers to carry all belongings, including food in their backpacks. Only water and space under a tent shared with five others are provided.

Competitors begin in the magnificent Wadi Rum desert, run up and down sand hills, go through ancient canyons, a rock arch, and past a camel racing track. After the final 50-mile stage, the race finishes in the ancient city of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Puerto Vallarta 100 Miler by UTMB

On November 8, I will attempt the Wixa’rika 100 miler in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The race begins at the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range and travels through the jungle before reaching the Pacific Ocean in Puerto Vallarta. With a variety of terrain, vegetation, and weather, runners must navigate through technical sections, broad paths, complex narrow trails, river crossings, and jungle wildlife.

Endurance Training with Longevity Principles

The training demands to complete these endurance feats place tremendous stress and strain on the body. As a physician and health enthusiast focused on longevity, this extreme endeavor competes with the more important aim of optimizing my health span. While pursuing my training plan, I emphasize many practices and routines that aim to slow the aging process. Follow my blog as I explore balancing these efforts.
